Meaning & History

Means "written stone" in Spanish, taken from the title of the Virgin Mary Nuestra Señora de Piedraescrita meaning "Our Lady of the Written Stone". She is the patron saint of the municipality of Campanario, located in the Spanish province of Badajoz.

According to folk legend, around the 15th century, a shepherd found a carved image of a female figure under a tombstone. When the shepherd found the figure in which he believed he saw the Virgin Mary, and after the supposed apparition or vision of the Virgin, he decided to take it to the town. The next day the figure disappeared from the town, appearing under the tombstone. The locals then decided to build a hermitage in the same place.
