From Modern Greek πικρός (pikrós) "bitter" and χολή (cholí) "gall, bile". This is the name of a fictional character in the novel Pentalogy Gargantua and Pantagruel characterized as a 'stereotypical bad king'. François Rabelais gave him the name to allude to his dark and acerbic moods possibly.
