Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek noun φορμίον (phormion) meaning "small mat, small basket" as well as "straw covering". The word is ultimately derived from the Greek noun φορμός (phormos) meaning "basket, wicker basket, mat", which itself is closely related to the Greek verb φορεω (phoreo) meaning "to carry, to bear". This name was borne by an Athenian general and admiral from the 5th century BC.
