Philander is the name of the father of American basketball player Dennis Rodman. He infamously lived up to what his name means - he's fathered 29 kids with several women.
Shouldn't a womanizer be called a "philgyner" (a "friend of woman")? A "philanderer" should be a promiscuous gay man. A promiscuous woman should be a philandress or philgyneress. (Ouch!)
Philander Phlop was the name of the head of the Phlop family in the old comic strip of that name (The Phlop Family). (I'm not certain about the spelling of the last name.) He was NOT a philanderer (in either the traditional sense or mine).
This name should also be put in the section of Greek Mythology, since Philander is said to be a son of Apollo by Acacallis (sometimes called Acalle). [noted -ed]
A pleasant enough sounding name except that there is no escaping the inevitable association that will be made to the word, "philanderer" -- not a very nice epitaph! If you like the -ander element, consider Lysander instead.
