Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek adjective φαντός (phantos) meaning "visible", which in turn is ultimately derived from the Greek verb φαντάζω (phantazo) meaning "to make visible".

A notable bearer of this name was the Italo-Greek saint Phantinos (c. 927-1000), who is better known under the name Fantinus the Younger. He was born and raised in what is now the region of Calabria in the deep south of Italy. During his lifetime, Calabria was a Byzantine dominion, where the Greek culture and language was dominant. His parents were named Georgius and Vriena (also Beyena and Vryaini), while his three siblings were named Caterina, Cosmas and Lucas. All are names of Greek origin, so like most (if not all) Calabrians of the time, the saint and his family must have spoken Greek natively. Saint Phantinos later also travelled to Greece, where he ended up spending the remainder of his life.
