Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek noun Φαίαξ (Phaiax) meaning "Phaeacian". A Phaeacian was an inhabitant of Phaeacia, a region in Greek mythology. The name of the region is written as Φαιακία (Phaiakia) in Greek. It might ultimately be derived from either the Greek adjective φαιός (phaios) meaning "grey" or the Greek noun φάος (phaos) meaning "light". The latter word is ultimately derived from the Greek verb φαίνω (phaino) meaning "to shine" as well as "to show, to appear". Also compare the related names Phaedra and Phaidon.
