Latinized form of the Greek name Φαιναρέτη (Phainarete) meaning "she who brings virtue to light", derived from the Greek verb φαίνω (phaino) meaning "to shine" as well as "to show, to appear" combined with the Greek noun ἀρετὴ (arete) meaning "virtue, excellence". This was the name of the mother of Socrates.
