Imagine if a man named this Peer(ed) into your room at night.
I dislike this name because it reminds me of peers like people you work with and pears, a fruit I dislike.
I wouldn't choose this name, it simply wouldn't work in many countries. It sounds like the English word 'pear' and looks like the word 'peer'. It also sounds kind of close to the French word for father which is 'père'.
I've heard this name used in the Netherlands as well but since the Dutch word peer means pear, it's not very common. The only person I ever met with this name was actually named Peter and had named himself this. He was one of those people who go out of their way to be original and he seemed to really enjoy people's reactions to his name. "Your name is pear?"
Like Renee already said below, Peer is used in the Netherlands... but Flanders (Belgium) as well, I would like to add. Historically, it was actually most prevalent there, as the frequency of the patronymic surname Peers indicates.Peer is a contraction of Peter and dates back to the medieval period, so it certainly isn't imported or newfangled in the Dutch-speaking world. It has just declined in popularity over time, probably due to the association with the Dutch word 'peer' meaning "pear" (which is more problematic in this day and age than it ever was in the past).A diminutive of the name is Peerke, of which the most notable bearer is the beatified Dutch priest Petrus "Peerke" Donders (1809-1887).Lastly, the Dutch pronunciation of the name is: /'pe:r/SOURCES:
