A very pretty name, feminine and womanly, recognizable in many languages. I don’t know why people feel the need to share that they know one person with a name or have heard of one person with a name, and that it has tainted their impression. This is true of literally every name in use — someone knows that person and has an impression of the person. It isn’t relevant, unless the association is culturally pervasive.
I have known a couple people named Paula who I liked and this name is a prettier alternative, but all I think about is "Paulina Novacek", the arms dealer from the movie Undercover Blues.
My mother wanted to name me Paula. I'm glad that my dad vetoed that one. I went to school with a girl named Paulina & that was the first time I had ever heard the name. It's so pretty! It doesn't even need a nickname. I would not have minded Paulina as my name!
