It doesn't sound as tacky in French, in fact it's quite pretty. Rather than 'pawl-ET', its 'po-LET'. Sort of like Colette with a p.

Though I prefer other feminine forms of Paul, Paulette is nice as well. It sounds pretty. I also like the association with actress Paulette Goddard.

Raunchy 'Paul' combined with 'ette' just sounds very tacky and even more raunchy together.
