Bears a resemblance to the Old English word ‘pægel’, meaning a small measurement of liquid, or a wine pot, which itself was derived from a proto-Germanic root meaning “peg, rake” or “half a pint”. The modern English ‘pail’ likely descends from it, There’s no solid evidence that the name stems from this root, but I thought it was worth noting the similarities.
