Meaning & History
Roman cognomen that was a derivative of the Greek name Orestes. It essentially means "of Orestes" in Latin, as it contains the Latin masculine adjectival suffix -inus; this suffix later developed into a diminutive suffix, so Orestinus could also be considered a Latin diminutive of Orestes. Known bearers of this cognomen include Quintus Mucius Orestinus, a 1st-century BC Roman politician who was one of the tribunes of the people in 64 BC, and Publius Cornelius Scipio Orestinus (5 BC-20), the father of Cornelia Orestilla (also known as Livia Orestilla, who was herself briefly the wife of the Roman emperor Caligula in 37 or 38).
