Derived from either the Greek noun ὀλύνθη (olynthe) meaning "wild fig tree" or the Greek noun ὄλυνθος (olynthos) meaning "fruit of the wild fig tree".A known bearer of this name was the Olympic victor Olyntheus of Laconia, who won the stadion race at respectively the 38th Olympiad (624 BC) and the 40th Olympiad (620 BC).
