Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek adjective οἰνωπός (oinopos) meaning "wine-coloured, wine-dark" as well as "wine-coloured in complexion" or "ruddy-complexioned". The word is ultimately derived from the Greek noun οινος (oinos) meaning "wine". It should also be noted that there is a source that claims that the meaning of Oinopion is "from the island of Oinopia". Oinopia was a Greek island that is now known as Aegina.
