In ancient times the word "Oved" (עובד) also had the meaning of "worship." Modern Hebrew still uses the phrase "Avodat elilim" (עבודת אלילים) to refer to idolatry [or (literally) the "worship of multiple gods."] [noted -ed]
This name was also used among the English Romani community in the 1800s:

UGHHH. Boring and sounds like the kid's going on a crusade.
In the Old Testament of the Bible, Obadiah was a prophet who spent his considerable wealth hiding, feeding, and caring for needy prophets who were being persecuted by Queen Jezebel, and Obadiah eventually had to borrow money in order to continue taking care of them.
I like OBADIAH in the Bible. He impresses me much because we are of the same name. I wish to be like him.
Jeremiah Obadiah Jackanory Jones was the hero of Jeremiah in the Dark Woods by Janet & Allan Ahlberg. Best name ever!
I also like the spelling Obediah, like from Guys & Dolls. Obediah is the main character's real name.
Obadiah Stane is Tony Stark's nemesis (and was friends with Tony's father) in "Iron Man."
Pompous, foreign-sounding, and a sure sign that the parents are far too religious.
I love this name. Even if it is sort of out-dated.
I really like this name, but I much prefer the spelling "Obediah".
