In ancient times the word "Oved" (עובד) also had the meaning of "worship." Modern Hebrew still uses the phrase "Avodat elilim" (עבודת אלילים) to refer to idolatry [or (literally) the "worship of multiple gods."] [noted -ed]
In the Old Testament of the Bible, Obadiah was a prophet who spent his considerable wealth hiding, feeding, and caring for needy prophets who were being persecuted by Queen Jezebel, and Obadiah eventually had to borrow money in order to continue taking care of them.
