Germanic name, in which the second element is Old High German burg meaning "fortress" (or the related Gothic bairgan "to keep, to save, to preserve" (Old High German bergan "to help, to rescue")). The first element may be from hnod "crush" (which comes from Old High German hnôtôn "to crush"), or Gothic nauþs "need, necessity" (Old High German nôt).
