Captain Nieves Fernández was a Filipino schoolteacher and guerrilla commander who fought the Japanese in Tacloban during World War II.[2] Fernández extensively trained her men in combat skills and making of improvised weaponry, as well as leading her men in the front. With only 110 men, she managed to eliminate over 200 Japanese soldiers during the course of the Japanese Occupation. The Imperial Japanese Army posted a reward of 10,000 pesos on her head in the hopes of capturing her, but to no avail. (from Wikipedia)
I've fallen in love with this name. It's gorgeous.
Pronounced KNEE-ev-es.
Well I'm Mexican and my family has always pronounced this nee-eh-viss.
Correct pronunciation, like the third commenter said is "NYEH-ves", both "e"s like in "get". The letter "v" can be pronounced as either "v" or "b" in English (some Spanish speakers make the distinction between them, although most don't).The NYEH part is pronounced like NIE in Danielle. This is because "nie" in "Nieves" is a sole syllable in Spanish. [noted -ed]
The Croatian and Slovene form is Nives.
Inexplicably reminds me of someone with good taste in music and wine.
A fine name.
Can also be used as a surname.
Darling.
Pronounced NEE-eh-bes, as "v" in Spanish (Spain) is pronounced "b".
My mom's name is Nives, and I'm not quite sure about the history behind it - I know it's very rare and derives from Latin nix, nives, meaning snow. But I like it so much!
I personally think it would be more appriopriate to name your daughter this if she was born in winter. Other than that, it's a lovely name.
Nelly Furtado's 2-year-old daughter is named this. Her song Promiscuous is currently the #1 song in North America.
Correction: Actually her name is spelt Nevis.
It also is used as a last name.
The way I pronounce it is NYEH-ves, sort of like the last part of Danielle.
It's pronounced nee-EH-bes. The Portuguese form is Neves [NE-vesh] and the Catalan is Neus.
Nieves also can be a masculine name, like others which do not take a gender mark, like Reyes, Asunción etc. Nevertheless it is currently a more feminine name. [translated]
