Meaning & History

Means "branch, shoot." Compare Nazareth, which stems from the same word. Netzar features in Sanhedrin 43a in the Talmud, during an apocryphal description of the death of Yeshua the Nazarene, as one of his five disciples. Netzar uses a pun with his name, alluding to Isaiah 11:1, saying, "And a branch {netzer} shall grow out of his roots," and the judges of the Sanhedrin respond with Isaiah 14:9 - "But you are cast out of your grave like an abhorred branch {netzer}," before giving him the death sentence.
