Meaning & History
Derived from the Japanese kanji 基 (moto) meaning "base, be base on" and 家 (ie) meaning "house, home, family".Other kanji combinations are also possible. A famous bearer was Motoie (基家) Kujō (九条), 1203-1280, a waka poet and Japanese nobleman active in the early Kamakura period. He is designated as a member of the New Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry (新三十六歌仙, Shinsanjūrokkasen).
