Variant of Morven. From the Scottish place name Morvern, a district in north Argyll, Mhorbhairne in the original Gaelic, meaning "sea gap" or "big gap" (muir "sea" or mór "great", bhairne "gap"). Mhorbhairne appears as the kingdom of Fingal in the Ossianic poems of James Macpherson.'Morvern Callar' is a 1995 novel by Scottish author Alan Warner, narrated in first person by a young woman of the same name.
