Meaning & History

From the titles of the Virgin Mary Nuestra Señora de Montiel and Mare de Déu de Montiel, meaning "Our Lady of Montiel" in Spanish and "Mother of God of Montiel" in Catalan, respectively. She is the patron saint of Benaguasil, a municipality in the province of Valencia, Spain. According to folk legend, in the 17th century a shepherd found the image of the Virgin made in white marble inside a cave. In devotion, a hermitage was built in the same place years later.
