Culturally speaking, Melvin has two associations, one positive and one negative. The positive one is the Seattle band the Melvins who are one of the few grunge bands to actually be grunge. And the negative one is the frontal wedgie made famous by Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.
In 2018, 63 is the most common age for an American (U.S.) Melvin who is registered male with the Social Security Administration. It is the 336th most common male first name for living U.S. citizens.
The name Melvin was given to 328 boys born in the US in 2016.
99.39 percent of people with the first name Melvin are male.
I think that its use (and overuse) in Mad Magazine is largely responsible for its "nerdy" associations.
It is becoming more popular in Sweden, but I doubt that it'll grow in popularity to that extent in any English-speaking country anytime soon.
