Culturally speaking, Melvin has two associations, one positive and one negative. The positive one is the Seattle band the Melvins who are one of the few grunge bands to actually be grunge. And the negative one is the frontal wedgie made famous by Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.

Always thought this name a bit goofy but the one I knew was so sweet and nice and well-liked. Everyone called him Mel, like Mel Gibson, and that sounds better to me. Mel died young and now I don't feel as negative toward the name, somehow.

The word MEL actually means "sweet", so I don't get the definition of Melvin meaning Chief, but I have seen mistakes in these definitions, and even in my own name.

I really like the name Melvin it's my name just spelled differently, not nerdy or unattractive at all. I think that it would be good if the name Melvin gets more popular. Melvin is such a dated and unattractive name. I'm thrilled to see Melvin is going down in popularity and won't be listed within the top 1000 much longer. The name should have left the charts LONG ago.

In my country, I hear this name rarely because it's not that popular. But I love this name, and it's also my sibling's name. I believe the meaning of Melvin is "chief" or "leader".

I think that its use (and overuse) in Mad Magazine is largely responsible for its "nerdy" associations.
This is an awful name. It will cause a lot of discrimination, knowing that Melvin is used as a generic name for a geek. I can't understand why it's still used, or why it's so trendy in Sweden. I guess that some other people don't think Melvin is nerdy.
Melvin is very, very popular where I live. It seems like every other boy is named Melvin/Melwin. I'm so tired of it.

This is my father's name. Even so I can't say I really like the name. The first half is fine "Mel" it's the second half that gets me "Vin". I really really dislike the name Vin or any name that has that name in it. Except the name Vincent. I happen to really like that name. Go figure.
Melvin, Melvin, Melvin. This sounds like a terrible name! Unfortunately, I got that name stuck in my head. Honestly, it sounds nerdy and kind of, well, dumb. No offense!
