Mees is a variant of Meus, which is a short form of Bartholomeus. In other words: it's not a diminutive. If it were a diminutive, the name would have contained one of the Dutch diminutive suffixes, namely -je and -ke (resulting in respectively Meesje and Meeske). Also see:

The name's modern use can partially be prescribed to the fact that "Mees" is also the Dutch name for the birds tits, chickadees, and titmice.
Kinda silly as a full name; best used as a nickname.
I love the name Mees, it sounds so simple and adorable. It always reminds me of the cute little boy in the film "Het Zakmes", which I used to watch all the time when I was a kid. As for the name, I have a hard time picturing a Mees older than about ten, but then I've never met an adult Mees before so if I did I think it could easily grow on me.
The Dutch pronunciation is MAYS. [noted -ed]
