This name became really trendy in France in the 80's. It's still pretty popular. I prefer this spelling to Matthieu, but in English I prefer Matthew to Mathew :)

Pronounced "mat•YEU" indeed, though I recommend that the "t" be pronounced softly. I really like this name, although I strongly dislike the English version Matthew in both spelling and pronunciation (math-ew).
