I think it's pronounced more like MAH-shə not MA-shə.

Masha is also the birth name of the character Elizabeth Keen from the TV show 'Blacklist', her father being Constantin Rostov and mother Katerina Rostova. When my dad heard the name, he immediately knew it was Russian in origin. I thought it was a clever connection.
It has two different meanings for the name Mariya (Russian name): "bitter" and "rebellious woman". I still think that it's a cute nickname for girls.

Masha is the little girl protagonist of 'Masha and Bear'. Masha and the Bear (Russian: Ма́ша и Медве́дь) is a Russian animated television series created by Oleg Kuzovkov and produced by Animaccord Animation Studio (Moscow, the Russian Federation), loosely based on the oral children's folk story of the same name. The show focuses on the adventures of a little girl named Masha and a fatherly bear that always keeps her from disasters. The first episode was released in 2009.
Hi, My daughter's name is Maša! Although originally it is a nickname for Maria in Russia, in Former Yugoslavia Maša (Masha) is a very cute and popular name for girls. Its pronunciation in English is as if it is spelt with an r (Marsha) and NOT like mash (potatoes). To me, this is certainly a beautiful name and I find some derogatory comments about the name on here totally ignorant!
This name is also Yiddish (Jewish). It is used as a feminine form, of the Hebrew name Moshe, which is masculine.

Speaking as a Jewish woman who is called Masha -- I was named after my great-grandmother -- I can confirm that it absolutely is not the feminine of Moshe.People like to think that it is because it's regarded as a Yiddish name, even though it's not, and so they felt they had to give it some kind of Jewish connotation. In actual fact, it's a name that was adopted by Yiddish from Russian, like many other Yiddish names were adapted from or were originally Russian, German or of other origin.Masha is a Russian abbreviation for Maria. Maria = Miriam.

It reminds me of Marsha with a Boston accent. Mah-shah. I probably wouldn't name anyone this.

"I probably wouldn't name anyone this." Well, people don't usually name their daughters Masha. It's a nickname for Mariya/Maria, not a full name.

Masha might make people think of the Russian girl who for a while was mostly known as Disney World Girl, Internet girl and Internet Porn girl. She was adopted by an American single man who abused her and put out pornographic pictures of her on the net. She has been on Oprah, but I wouldn't call her story amazing.
