Markesa

Medieval Basque name of uncertain origin and meaning, although it is generally treated as both a feminine form of Marko (the Basque form of Marcus) and an equivalent of medieval Spanish Marquessa. It was first recorded in Aratzuri (in the general area of Navarre) in 1234.
