Mariel is a municipality and town in the Artemisa province of Cuba. It is where the port of Mariel is located, it's the closest port to the United States. The port is known for the Mariel boatlift; a mass emigration of Cuban refugees who fled Castro's dictatorship and traveled from Cuba's Mariel Harbor to the United States between April, 15th and October, 31st 1980. Hundreds of thousands of Cubans boarded fish and shrimp vessels, crossed the treacherous Florida Straits and arrived at U.S. shores. Those involved became known as "Marielitos". By October, 31st 1980 125,266 Cubans and about 25,000 Haitians had arrived to the coast of Florida.Earnest Hemingway named his daughter after the town of Mariel. I've never met any Spanish speaker with this name though, including Cubans. The feminine version would be Mariela, which is fairly common.
I love this name to pieces. It doesn't have even remotely similar popularity to Mary, and yet it still has that same soft and frilly sound. It's cute, but also mature. It's one of the few old-fashioned names that I actually like, as it has not been overused to death.
Lovely. Marie is a nice nickname.
Apparently also occasionally used in Estonia: https://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariel
This is my name. I personally like it, but maybe I'm biased. It's nice because it doesn't sound weird, yet it is not common at all. People often tell me they think my name is pretty. It's also cool having the same name as a titular Redwall character, as I happen to be a fan of that series. The name is feminine but not too girly, which is great because I'm sort of a tomboy.
To me it sounds like a combination of Mary (or Marie) and Ariel.
This name looks more like an anglicisation of Marielle to me, which is also in the main database and is currently described as a "French diminutive of Marie".

The name stands out, along with Rosamond, among all the more commonly encountered names of that period in the list. I love that, because it shows the name has historical validity. I also love Merrilyn, but by contrast would never use it because it's a 20th century coinage.

This is my name, and I just love it. ^___^
I think it's very pretty, although I do hate it when people say it like MARY-UHL. Ugh. And some pronounce it like MAHRY-UHL, which I don't understand. I agree with the person slightly above this comment, it's pronounced MARY-ELLE.
Mariel Zagunis- also won the Gold Medal in Womens Sabre Fencing at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Just this morning actually.
In one of the Redwall books there is a female heroine named Mariel. Her father was killed by Gabool the Wild, but when Gabool attacked her and threw her into the sea during a terrible storm she survived. The mousemaid lived on her own for many days, not remembering anything and deciding to name herself Storm Gullwhacker. She was lead to Redwall, where after hearing a poem, begins to have flashbacks, and remembers everything. During these flashbacks she remembers her father, and how they traveled together on a ship. Her father would say that her name was like the ringing of bells across an open field: "Mariel! Mariel!" I love that! This name is one of my favourites, and I liked the book too, although I didn't finish it.
I pronounce it MARY-ELLE, well it's my friend's name so actually she pronounces it like that. I think the name's okay, kind of cute but always reminds me of Muriel which is very ugly!
