It can also be used (albeit rarely) in Italian. A notable Italian bearer was Marianita Lante Montefeltro della Rovere (1873-1971), the wife of Alessandro Ruspoli, 7th Prince of Cerveteri. She is the great-grandmother of Francesco Ruspoli, the current Prince of Cerveteri, as well as filmmaker Tao Ruspoli.
Marianita is not really used as a nickname for Mariana. I'm Portuguese and we don't use nicknames often. Mari would be a obvious nickname. Marianita is not used that much. And it's never used as a first name. [noted -ed]
