Mariamne Johnes (1784 – 1811) was the only daughter of Thomas Johnes of Hafod Uchtryd in mid Wales. She was a talented botanist and a friend and regular correspondent of the English botanist Sir James Edward Smith. She suffered with health problems for much of her life and died in London aged 27.
Mariamne was the wife of King Herod, but she was also one of the murderous king's victims. Herod had her killed, accusing her unjustly of plotting against him. He apparently later went mad with guilt after her murder. So Mariamne is not the name of an evil queen, but rather an abused and murdered wife.
