Mari was also the name of an ancient city-state in Mesopotamia (near modern-day Abu Kamal, Syria). Written in Cuneiform, the name of the city can be traced to Itūr-Mēr, an ancient storm deity of northern Mesopotamia and Syria, who was considered the tutelary deity of the city.
