Meaning & History

Means "auspicious, lucky" in Sanskrit. This is a transcription of both the Sanskrit masculine form मङ्गल and the feminine form मङ्गला. The masculine form refers to the Hindu god of anger, aggression and war who personifies the planet Mars, while the feminine form is used as another name for the goddess Parvati. In Buddhist tradition this is also the name of the buddha directly preceding Siddhartha Gautama.
