Meaning & History
Meaning uncertain; possibly a derivative of Mamers, an Oscan name of the god Mars, or possibly from Latin mamma meaning "breast, mama (child's word for mother)", which in turn is derived from Greek μάμμη (mamme) "mother".Saint Mammes of Caesarea was a semi-legendary child-martyr of the 3rd century AD. His parents, Theodotus and Rufina, were also martyred. He is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church, and his feast day is traditionally celebrated on August 17.
