I saw that email and when I was looking for a name for my dog who had been severely abused before I got her. She made it through all that so I wanted something strong. I use the boys version for her which the English version means strong little warrior. I like that as well!
My name is Malin (I'm Swedish) but yes from what I know it doesn't mean anything in Swedish, it comes from Magdalena from the Bible. I've always gotten a lot of compliments on my name but people often pronounce it wrong. The correct pronunciation is rhyming with Stalin. In London people seem to always think my name is Marlin, but Americans usually get it right! When I lived in LA people were quite good at pronouncing the name correctly.
People think Malin is a boy’s name just because it looks masculine. If it’s pronounced muh-lynn, then it sounds like a girl’s name. So technically, it can be used for either gender.
I like Malin a lot. Because of how it sounds and because of its Scandinavian connection. And because of that Astrid Lindgren's book about Saltkrakan. And because it sounds like malina which means raspberry in Polish. I love raspberries and that is and will probably always be my strongest association. I like the soft and refreshing sound of this name. It's just like raspberries, haha.

I like this name, but since I speak French, I can't shake the meaning the name has in French, either "clever" (un enfant Malin - a clever/crafty child) or "evil" (des esprits malins - evil spirits).
Malin... does anyone know exactly what it means? I saw a tattoo of a broken arrow with the front and tail of the arrow looking like an infinity sign. The ink is interesting but if I can't find the exact meaning, then all my research is for naught. Too many different meanings in all these comments, so seriously... does anyone know for sure what it means?
I didn't know this was a female name pronounced MAH-lin. I live in the US, and my great-grandfather's name was Malin, pronounced MAL-in. I also read a thriller as a child, I think it was "Riptide" by Lincoln & Childe, starring a man named Malin. I've always been rather partial to that name for a boy.
As a bearer of this name I have to also inform that this name is also very common in the Swedish speaking Finns community which contains about 6% of the Finnish population and is recognized as a minority in Finland. Swedish is therefore the second national language in Finland, and therefor I think people should know that Malin is also a common name in Finland, it has variations in the Finnish speaking population and it´s most commonly written Maalin.

Yet another name popularized through an Astrid Lindgren story. It got trendy in Sweden after the films about "Saltkråkan" were first shown on TV. Malin was the very lovable oldest sister in the family who came to visit the island out in the archipelago.

Malin does mean "trofast, trogen." And most like every name, all of them have their own meanings. Ok, it's true that Malin is a Swedish version of "Magdalena" but that's just the history. But it means "true, faithful."
