Meaning & History
The origin of this name is still today quite uncertain. The theories include:
1) From the Breton name Malo, composed of two elements: mac’h (pledge, hostage) plus luh (light, bright, beautiful). In turn the name means “pledge of light”.
2) From the Latin magnus gloriōsus, meaning “king of the principles, very glorious”.
3) From the Germanic element *maginą, meaning “ability, power, might, main”. Magloire, better known as Saint Magloire of Dol, is a Breton saint, one of a number attributed an origin the other side of the English Channel. Magloire was a Welsh monk who became Bishop of Dol-de-Bretagne in Brittany, and ended his life on the island of Sark, where he was abbot of a monastery.
