Meaning & History
The first element of this name is possibly derived from the Doric Greek noun μαχανά (machana) meaning "machine, device, tool, contrivance", which is of the same etymology as the modern English word machine. The second element almost certainly consists of ίδας (idas), which is the Aeolic and Doric Greek form of the patronymic suffix ἴδης (ides). This name was borne by a tyrant of Sparta, who lived in the 3rd century BC.
