My daughter's name is Máire, it is Mary in Irish, in Donegal it's pronounced My-uh, I love the name!
The r is dropped only in Donegal Irish. Otherwise, it's pronounced as a "slender" r, which sounds like something between a d and a z.

I wish I understood Gaelic better so I would understand why you pronounce the I harder than the A even though the A's the letter with the accent. I would have pronounced this name "Merra", which I think sounds really pretty.
I believe the 'R' is actually silent and it is pronounced "MOY-uh".
www.babynamesofireland.com lists the pronunciation as "MY-ra".
One of my teachers is named Maire, but she pronounses it "MAY-re". I've noticed that a lot of people have problems pronouncing it right (I've heard many call her "MAR-je"). I think it's very exotic and pretty, though.
This is my little sister's middle name and my mother pronounces it 'MY-ree', although it doesn't have the accent over the 'a'. She may be wrong.
Actually, the pronunciation depends on the dialect: "MOI-ra", "MOI-a", and "MAW-rya" are all acceptable.
I think it's more like "MAW-rya" than "MOI-ra", actually.
