Maire (without the acute accent, pronounced as MIE-re) is a Finnish female name. It is derived from the word "mairea", which means "flattering", "gushing" and "affected". [noted -ed]
I wish I understood Gaelic better so I would understand why you pronounce the I harder than the A even though the A's the letter with the accent. I would have pronounced this name "Merra", which I think sounds really pretty.

I believe the 'R' is actually silent and it is pronounced "MOY-uh".

That's my name, and that's its exact spelling. My mother named me the equivilant of Mary in Irish. She loves the spelling and so do I.
I think this would be a lovely name to give to a daughter as Máire and Mary are quite rare amongst little girls now so it would be quite traditional and slightly unusual at the same time!
MÁIRE is a lovely name, I think. I have an Irish godmother with that name.

One of my teachers is named Maire, but she pronounses it "MAY-re". I've noticed that a lot of people have problems pronouncing it right (I've heard many call her "MAR-je"). I think it's very exotic and pretty, though.

I think this name is pretty but sad, because I know it means 'bitter'. The spelling seems a bit prettier than the pronunciation (I'm American and only hear MOY-ra) to me.
Indeed, Máire Ní Bhraonain is Enya's sister. Máire is the voice of Clannad, an Irish band. She recently changed her name from Máire to Moya, because that names is more easy to pronounce.

Actually, the pronunciation depends on the dialect: "MOI-ra", "MOI-a", and "MAW-rya" are all acceptable.

I think it's more like "MAW-rya" than "MOI-ra", actually.
