Meaning & History
This name is commonly used in the Georgian highlands. Georgian sources state that the etymology of Lukhum is unknown, but a Russian source connects it to Turkish delight, which was known as لوقوم (lokum) in Ottoman Turkish. The modern Georgian name for the Turkish confection is რაჰათ-ლუხუმი (rahat-lukhumi).In Georgian literature, Lukhum is the name of one of the heroes in the epic poem Bakhtrioni (1892) written by the Georgian poet and writer Vazha-Pshavela (1861-1915).
