I think Lorelei is a beautiful name. It is strong, feminine and elegant, and it ages gracefully. I also appreciate the fact that it is unique and not an overused name that you hear everyday. I used to have a doll named Lorelei, and I have always thought it was a gorgeous name.
I love my name! I gave it to myself and no it wasn't because of the Gilmore Girls though I do like the show, My birth name was Lori Ann and my aunt has always called me Lorelei so when my husband went to court to take his biological father's name, I figured it was as good a time as any to just change the whole dang name! So I went to court and changed my name to Lorelei Leigh, my momma didn't talk to me for a month and she still refuses to call me Lorelei but that's OK. It is not like I had some family name passed down from generations. I have 3 cousins with the middle name Ann and every Lori I know middle name is Ann, I stand by choice of names!
I called my daughter Lorelei mainly because of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. We had several names in mind before we met her but on meeting her we decided it was her name! It's not a trashy name. And I've never seen Gilmore Girls. It's unique (to me) because I've never met a Lorelei. My name (Kathryn) is common, I guess, but no one can spell that either! We will both have to go without named gifts and forever be the receiver of the present bearing the legend "They Didn't Have Your Name"!
I have a friend named Lorelei, and she is the most amazing person EVER! I love her, and the meaning of the name pretty much suits her. Pretty cool, right?
My friend is named Lorelei and I think it's a beautiful name. It gives the impression of kindness and gentleness as well as grace and good-naturedness.

Omg I have no idea why people are hating on this name! It’s so beautiful. My fav YouTube (Lorelei Carlson) has that name! It’s lovely.
Lorelei and Loreley are both classic spelling of this name (Loreley is the older one).It is always pronounced with three syllables in German. Loh-reh-LIE (last syllable rhymes with "eye"). In English it sounds like LAW-reh-lie, so slightly different, but still nice.I'm German and while this name is unusual in Germany (because everyone knows of the myth and she lured boaters to their death by singing) it is a perfectly well respected name. I know a German girl with the middle name Lorelei. So it's fine to use. No one will think you are weird for doing so.Lorelai is not a classic spelling and was introduced through "Gilmore Girls" in the early 2000s. I wouldn't recommend it, even though you can use it if you like, because it's not as classic and more associated with the TV show.

My parents were thinking about naming me this. For my mom it was because of the T.V. show Gilmore Girls where one of the main characters name is Lorelei. However my dad only considered it because he wanted a German name and in German Lorelei is like siren, I was quite upset when I found out that I was supposed to be named this but wasn't.
Oh I like it. I think it is ideal for a teenager or young woman, although it is ideal for all ages as well. Lorelei has a very beautiful sound, it is original and feminine, but not too cloying like other types of names. Personally, I have barely heard it and it seems like an underrated name to me, but maybe in a few years it will become more famous...
I think this name has some really nice meaning to it. Not only because my favorite YouTuber's name is Lorelei, but it is a name you really would not hear of most of the time.
The origin and meaning is not nearly as mysterious as it seems, considering that 'lore' means legend/story and 'ley' means rock. The 'maiden' part is one of those antropomorphic embellishments which sailors are famous for, whenever the water seems more powerful than a ship they tend to 'see' half clothed women trying to 'lure' them to their doom. This says nothing about the intentions of women, but rather a lot about where male minds wander when they are bored and supplied with alcohol.
Anyone saying this is not a German name, okay, this is your opinion, not a fact. When I told my Oma (that's granny in German) I was thinking of naming my daughter this, she was so happy and said it was a, "beautiful old old OLD German name! Wie suß!" She was very excited for it because I was thinking about naming her Hildegarde before, but Oma said, "no, don't do that to her!" Lol! So Hildegarde is her second middle name just like my Oma. It's a family name. I got Oma's approval before I named her, and Oma confirmed the name's origin. It's not a popular name in Germany, but it is a very old German name, and my daughter always gets compliments on it. People always say, "Oh, that's such a beautiful name!" It is enchanting, and I love the two, 'L's in the name. They sound so elegant and just beautiful, like a song. She loves her name too. Just beautiful. Some people mispronounce it like LauraLee, but my daughter is a very head strong girl and she has no problem with correcting them! When they hear the real pronunciation, they usually say, "What a beautiful name," and, "I like that much better than the way I was saying it!" It's wonderful!
I can see why people love the sound, though it's not really my style, and there are sweet nickname choices. Personally the meaning would put me off quite a bit. I'm not a fan of girls' names meaning 'alluring', and I wouldn't choose one associated with sirens.

Such a rare, gorgeous name! It has a classic ring to it and sounds spunky and flavourful. I don't mind the mythological association- in fact, I find the fact that the name comes from a legend rather enticing. Also, I don't see how the name Lorelei could be trashy. You're confusing it with a name like Kaeleigh, Jaylynn, Londynn, etc. Lorelei sounds very classic and is far from trashy.
My beautiful daughter is named Lorelei. I had never heard of the Gilmore Girls before naming her, I knew several Loreleis growing up. Every day I’m glad I chose this name and we never have a problem with the pronunciation. It’s funny how many comments mention the name in mythology and songs - the myth was supposed to be symbolic and you can find a negative association with any name if you try hard enough. Lorelei basically means alluring, and who wouldn’t want to have others drawn to them? My daughter loves her name and it has exploded in popularity (probably due to the Pokemon character). Her nickname as a baby was Lolli and now is Lore. Lore has become very popular as a shortened version of this name, I think because people like that it means storytelling - we just met a baby named Lore Victoria. Anyhow, if you’re thinking of naming your baby Lorelei, don’t hesitate, it’s the most beautiful name.
Lorelei gives me this rustic southern vibe for some reason. I feel the sound of the name carries a cadence and is a gorgeous name. I honestly didn't hear the name till watching Gilmore girls, but I don't think the show should define this name. It was an amazing show when it came out but the name is too old to be connected to the show at this point. I love the nickname Lore, it's fun and reminds me of stories and it's definitely a fresher approach compared to Lori. I love the combination Lorelei Victoria.
I don't mean to be offensive but... At first you said this name is pretty and uncommon, THEN you said it's crap and it sucks, I'm confused whether you like the name or not...Just helping.
Truthfully, I actually would consider using Lorelei as a name for my future daughter. It looks and sounds so charming, yet unusual -- in a good way -- at the same time, which I adore.
The Lorelei are sirens along the Rhine River. They lure sailors to their deaths. The name is German and means "alluring, temptress," according to nameberry.

Seriously, what's with all the negative feedback. My 7yr old daughter is named Lorelai, and the way it's spelled is my choice... She loves her name, her full name is Lorelai Khulannha Reid. I have never had a bad comment said when she tells folks her name. We live in Scotland and have yet to meet another Lorelai. Also, I have never watched the Gilmore girls, I just love the name. I heard it in a poem years ago and it has stuck with me. Seriously people, it's a name, and I am proud of my girl, and her name!
In his brilliant musical, "Follies." Sondheim uses "Lorelei" as a word that defines beautiful women. Indeed the song is called "Beautiful Women."As former stars of yesteryear's Follies (a fictional mirror of the Ziegfield Follies) are introduced to the audience while descending a magnificent staircase, the following ingenious rhyme from the lyric can be heard:Faced with these Loreleis What man can moralize?
Lorelei Taron is a successful Argentinian singer. She and Radamel Falcao met in a church when she was just 16 and they were married three years later when she was 19 years old. They have two daughters, Dominique and Desiree.
Since my name is Lorelei, and has been for 60 years, my two cents: - Great name! - Still unusual despite “Gilmore Girls”. - Although I have never met another Lorelei face-to-face, I once worked for a company where there were two of us: one on the East Coast and one on the West (USA); probably a good thing! - People enjoy inquiring about its origin or meaning. - I have never received a single negative comment although, many have mispronounced or misspelled it when addressing me as I spell it as shown above. - Most people don't know it's German in origin and many have suggested it's "Southern" (American), which I don't quite get. - Whenever I meet someone from Germany, they always get a kick out of meeting me simply because of my name.

I fell in love with this name years ago. Before I ever even though of having kids, I named my daughter Loralei Elaine. Yes, spelled differently, but that's my choice. Everyone always gives compliments about her name. I don't understand why some people think this name is trashy. To each their own I guess. As a name that I don't hear often I love it. People should go back to the older names, these new names people come up with are ridiculous.
Seeing as Heinrich Heine is a relation on my great-grandmother's side, I can totally see myself using Lorelei as a name for a little girl! (although I may be a bit biased, who knows?) Additionally, Lorelei is a mythology name, a literary name, an art name (the Lorelei statue in New York City, a name from television (Gilmore Girls) and a place name (Lorelei Rock near The Rhine River. These associations make Lorelei that much more interesting.
I love this name so much! My husband and I picked this name out when we were in high school and nine years later our first daughter is Lorelei Rose! She gets complimented on her name all the time. She goes by Rory mostly and a lot of people assume her name is Aurora. So when she says her name is Lorelei everyone loves it.
I think it's really sad that some people have been so negative. For one thing, saying it's not a name in Germany... I think some people need to be more open minded to the diversity of the world and names. Now, I personally love the name. The myth. The strong female character namesakes. The nickname Lore, and Lori, and Lorel. It's pretty, but not too girly.

The spelling is a potential problem for this name, depending on how you want to pronounce it. Some would argue that Lorelei is Lor-uh-lie, and others that it's Lor-uh-lee. And some people will think that Lorelai is pronounced Lor-uh-lay, and visa versa. Either spelling is fine for me. I am 50/50 on them both. But... For those of us who have watched every episode of The Gilmore Girls, we'll probably be steered subconsciously towards the alternative spelling Lorelai, pronounced as they do on the show, Lor-uh-lie.

I named my daughter Lorelai. I'm not sure why so many people are calling the name trashy. It's not a trashy name by any stretch of the imagination. One thing I really love about the name is she will probably never meet another Lorelai. I haven't had too many people that are unable to pronounce her name either. I just hate that so many people thought they had to post so many negative comments about the name. I love it and everyone I tell her name to loves it as well.
In Marvel Comics and adaptations, Lorelei is the younger sister of Amora the Enchantress. She uses magic to control men's minds, making them do whatever she asks including killing for her and having sex with her while they are unable to consent.
I love this name! First of all I love Styx and the version JY does of this song live now, so that would be cool, plus I love its uniqueness and how it sounds. 10 star rating for Lorelei!

Lorelei Martins (played by Emmanuelle Chriqui) is a character on a TV show called The Mentalist. She is a cocktail waitress and a follower of the serial killer Red John.
I like this name; I think it sounds pretty but I don't think this name is good on a young girl. It's really pretty on a grown woman but on a young girl it just doesn't fit.
Most people won't know how to spell it and it's a mythological creature known for murdering every man that crossed her path. I really don't see the appeal of this name at all.
A beautiful name with a beautiful pronunciation. A very good friend of mine recently had baby and named her Lorelei. I love it! If I am so blessed with a daughter, I will definitely consider this name.

Sounds gothic and unique. I like it but it's not the best of names considering its origin and meaning. Other than that, it's a nice name and it does sound very mythical.

This is one of the few frilly names I actually likePeople suggest Rory as a nickname only because Rory on Gilmore Girls was actually named Lorelai. Lori makes more sense to me. This name isn't 'trashy' really.
I love this name. For some reason, I like it better than Lorelai. It's so pretty and elegant. This name is just so perfect.

What a beautiful name, I used it to name a character I drew today. I didn't associate it at all with Gilmore Girls because I never watch it, and I'm pretty sure future generations will think of that even less, so don't let that hold you back from using it!
It's a pretty name, and it sounds lovely. However, it's become associated with Gilmore Girls. On top of that, people are now spelling it Lorelai due to that show's influence. I could never use it.
As a holder of the name, I like it, and I've never met another Lorelei. My name is often mispronounced, mispelled, etc. I've introduced myself as Lorelei and people have called me Laura, either not hearing the last syllable or believing that "Lie" is my last name. Very strangely, people have returned phone calls to me calling me "Marlene". Growing up my family used the nickname Lori, as my Aunt Lorelei used. Noone has ever thought that Lorelei is trashy sounding-perhaps it is in Germany, but I am not German. I'm sure many common German names sound negative to native English speakers as well.
There are three characters from Gilmore Girls named Lorelai, the mother is Lorelai Victoria Gilmore, her daughter is Lorelai Leigh Gilmore, called Rory, and her grandmother is Lorelai Gilmore, called Trix.
The band "Blackmore's Night" does a beautiful song called Loreley about the sirens in the River Rhine. I adore that song, and hence, adore the name. Here's part of the song:"Merrily we sailed along, Though the waves were plenty strong, Down the twisting River Rhine, Following a song.Legends faded storyline, Tried to warn us all, Oh they call her Lorely, Careful, or you'll fall. And the winds would cry, And many men would die, And all the waves would bow down, To the Loreley."
I think this name is really beautiful. Yes, I do associate it with Gilmore Girls, (even though they spell it with an a instead of an e) but I think that's a good thing. I LOVE that show, and both Lorelais are very likeable. It's a happy association.
The name isn't hard to pronounce. In names like Elizabeth or Anastacia there are more letters than in Lorelei, but no one is saying that they are complex names. I personally think that Lorelei is one of the most frilly names ever; it is pretty in the old romantic story, but shouldn't be used in real life.
A very very pretty name in my opinion, although I don't think I would ever name a child this because it just seems like no one can pronounce it properly. Even I had a hard time trying to sound it out at first. I've heard some people say lor-ELL-ee and laurel-EYE.
I adore this name. It's very feminine and I absolutely love the way it sounds (I prefer the spelling Lorelai though). I do associate it with Gilmore girls but it's not a bad thing actually, this show is a guilty pleasure of mine.
I think Lorelei is a beautiful name, but adding to the ugly sirens concepts, in tropical regions it is believed that sailors thought a sea mammal called manatees were sirens, check out a pic of these animals, they are really ugly!
To me it sounds very exotic. But not in a Hawaiian-kind, mainly in a fairytale-kind. I wish there was a Disney Princess called Lorelei. Hey, nice idea!
Lorelei was a Siren, not a mythological nymph. Sirens were in fact described as very ugly, looking somewhat like a mutant seabird and nothing at all like a mermaid in the traditional sense. From a distance, their looks were appealing and their songs sweet, but up close their true appearances and voices were revealed, leaving the poor sailors nothing pleasant to drown to. [noted -ed]
Translation of the famous German poem written in the early 1800s. "The Lorelei" by Heinrich HeineI don't know what it may signify That I am so sad; There's a tale from ancient times That I can't get out of my mind. The air is cool and the twilight is falling and the Rhine is flowing quietly by; the top of the mountain is glittering in the evening sun. The loveliest maiden is sitting Up there, wondrous to tell. Her golden jewelry sparkles as she combs her golden hair She combs it with a golden comb and sings a song as she does, A song with a peculiar, powerful melody. It seizes upon the boatman in his small boat With unrestrained woe; He does not look below to the rocky shoals, He only looks up at the heights. If I'm not mistaken, the waters Finally swallowed up fisher and boat; And with her singing The Lorelei did this.
Marilyn Monroe's character's name in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" was "Lorelei Lee" which explains the name's popularity in the Fifties. The name's popularity now can perhaps be accounted for by Lauren Graham's character "Lorelai" on "Gilmore Girls," and the popularity of names reflecting ethnicity and mythology, as well as mermaids like "Ariel" in Walt Disney's "The Little Mermaid."

Loreli (Lorely) are mythological nymphs (mermaids) of the Rhine river in Germany who sang sweetly to lure the sailors to their deaths. The sailors would end up crashing on the rocks while entraced in the Loreli's song.
