"Lola" is the name of 2024 Drama about a "impoverished" stripper trying to make enough money to move out of her abusive home. It was directed and written by Nicola Peltz, who also starred. Peltz, the daughter of Billionaire Nelson Peltz, garnered criticism for it's so-called "exploitive Poverty P0rn", with critics calling "out of touch", "insincere", and "Embarrassing".
I admit, I don't personally like the name, but it's massively overhated. At worst, it's a boring name. It's not that bad compared to other names, like Kortney, which is a really tacky spelling of Courtney.
As someone whose middle name is Lena (I don’t like that name tbh, it’s after my paternal grandma, Lena) I really want my middle name to be Lola. The reason why is because I always wanted to be called that after Charlie and Lola. It’s a tv show based on a bunch of books by Lauren Child about a boy looking after his younger sister, Lola. Lola was mischievous yet very cute. She was very naive and had a large imagination, she was… quirky! 😊 So please you can call me “Lola”, “Sandy”, “Sadhbh” and maybe “SandyLife” if you want to.
My little sister is named Lolah and I see nothing wrong with that. And yes we spell her name like that because Lola is used often and Lolah isn't so often, and Lola is used so often because it's a good name.
I know a dog named Lola but just because I know a dog doesn’t mean that it’s a bad name for a human! It's better than some names I heard before that I’m not pronouncing because some people might get offended. But I do like the name Lola. Would go good on a girl. I feel bad for anyone who is called Lola and reads all of these mean comments.
I am a Lola and I love my name. When people judge my name it does hurt quite a bit because I believe a name does not define you at all. If you choose to listen to people who call it trashy, or prostitute worthy, or even disgusting?! Then it can crush your self esteem. I have faced judgement for my name my whole life (mostly by older people to be honest) from people telling me my name is inappropriate, childish, and many jokes about what Lola wants Lola gets. Besides all of that though, I love my name. It has a beautiful meaning, it's religious believe it or not, it means lady of sorrows. The lady of sorrows does not mean sadness but is actually a reference to the Virgin Mary. It is a very honorable name to have even for non Christians. I am not Christian but I am very honored to be named after a very strong woman who went through so much. This is a very strong name that I am proud to have. Thank you mom for naming me Lola!
The comments here are just plain MEAN. My name isn’t even Lola and I’m offeneded! I don’t love the name but it is A LOT better than other ones out there. I definitely don’t think it’s childish. Except there is a nickname common for Lola that I find a bit too childish, Lolly sounds too over the top but eh, it’s better than some other nicknames.
Also used in French.Lola became popular in France in the late 90's and peaked in 2010.In addition, there are 72,329 female bearers of this name in the country (source: https://www.magicmaman.com/prenom/lola,2006200,13932.asp). [noted -ed]
Lola is a stupid name. It’s tacky and doesn’t roll off the tongue for me. I can’t imagine a senior named Lola. It’s a great name for a dog or a cat, though.

I wanted to be called Lola when I was about 3 or 4 years old. My parents still bring it up to this day and it embarrasses me. Lola is a stupid and childish name that makes me think of a dumb blond brat. I’m so glad my parents never agreed to legally change my name to Lola.
I love how simple it is! But the only problem is that it reminds me too much of Lola Bunny, and I don't like her, but I think I can get pass it. Really cute :)
It’s okay. Personally I’m not a fan but if you want to use it that’s fine. To me Lola brings up two different images: a cute, sweet, and somewhat sassy little girl or a beautiful seductive temptress. I can’t help but think of the song “whatever Lola wants Lola gets” from the musical Damn Yankees. But if you love the name and want to use it don’t let my opinion stop you.
I still don't really care for this name, but that's only my opinion. If you like the name, then go for it. It's a classic, and one good thing is that it's easy to spell. It ages well, and it works for a baby. It's a nice name overall, but I just wouldn't use it and I'm only one person with one opinion. Don't let my opinion ruin your opinion on this name. It's also better than Delores in my opinion.
I disagree with SaltyLemon, I think this name is a very pretty name that just sounds beautiful and refreshing to my ears. But as I have always said, "to each their own."

Super pretty. This would also be a cute name for a pet!
Lola is a very nice name. I don't think of it as "stripper-ish". I do not think the song association will be a problem because a lot of kids nowadays haven't heard of it. I didn't even know about the song until I read the comments.
My daughter’s name is Lola. Her nickname is Lolli but goes by both names equally. She was named after our 98 year old Italian family friend so yes, the name does age well. We are part Filipino and I like to joke with my daughter when she becomes a grandma she won’t have to change her name. I was afraid when celebrities started naming their daughters Lola, it would become popular and I didn’t want my daughter to have a common name. Fortunately, it seems based off the comments here many people associate it with a name for a prostitute (haha seriously?) that I don’t have to worry about it.

My second daughter’s name is Eloise Pansy Angelina and we call her Lola. Lola is one of those names, in my opinion, it’s similar to Lily, which is my eldest daughter's nickname. Lola and Lily are names that I absolutely adore, but could never name a child that. That’s why I settled on Eloise Pansy and Ethelind Alina, Lola and Lily could be the diminutive form, but if she wants, she could go by Eloise Pansy or Ethelind Alina. I know the meaning is sorrows, but I think that the meaning is very deep and beautiful.
Hey it's me again Lola, I know there's some discrimination against the name but it's funny how people relate to my name in real life and my nickname (other than lollipop) is Lola bunny, it has been my nickname since I was born anyways.
I have a friend who is from the Philippines and she told me that Lola means "grandma" in her language. Since then every time I hear or read this name I think about a grandma!
For some very peculiar reason, I actually like this name. It has many strengths that are quite favorable, for one, the name is easy to spell, the pronunciation won’t be difficult for most individuals that hear it and it is not overused as other names are currently. Given those ideal points, I think the name Lola is quite charming in a melodic way.
Lola Loud is a character in the Nickelodeon show “The Loud House”. She is six years old and a pageant princess and the complete opposite of her twin sister, Lana.
I don't really get the people who say the Kinks song is a reason to dislike this name. For one thing the song is not about a sexual encounter with anyone, as in an interview the band's drummer Mick Avory said the idea for the song came from him and some of the other band members frequenting a bar which had a number of transsexuals. That's it. Also that song is amazing and has been ranked by numerous publications as one of the greatest singles of the 20th century or in all of rock music. And the song isn't disrespectful to trans people either, its more of a light-hearted or slightly risqué 1970s rendition of a Shakespearean gender-confusion.So basically the name is fine. Anybody who thinks too far into it or puts some connotation towards a someone named it is a weird person anyway.

To all you judgemental and shallow minded people on this thread, My daughter's name is Lola and she is the light of my life. I do not look at her and think of a prostitute, a stripper or any other demeaning garbage. It is people like you who cause poor self image, self doubt and sadness in the lives of ordinary and nice people. My daughter LOLA will grow up and be raised to respect everyone regardless of what their name is.

I really love the name Lola. I would use it as a nickname for Laura or a related name. I have only known a few people named Lola and I liked all of them. They were not strippers or sex workers, but even if they were, I wouldn't look down on them or think they were bad people. I do, however, think quite poorly of people who call other humans "trashy" just for having a particular name or job.
Lola is a popular name in Africa in Nigeria. I bear Omolola short form as Lola and I love this name so much. Is a name that you people can also bear or name your child because in my country it means child is wealth.

I could not find this thread more hilarous. I have been a Lola for 55 years. When I was young I hated it because I was the only one I had ever met. I felt weird and alienated. But I grew into it. Now I can't imagine being anything else. To me it is such a strong name that you have to define yourself. That is what all names are. You have to write your own story. I am fine with mine and all the transvestite, Copacobana, references that come with it. Ice breakers are what I consider them. I am proud to be a Lola.
This name is okay. I like the sound of it but I agree it has a trashy aspect, and a bad reputation and would not suit an adult. This is not a name I would use for my daughter.
The Kinks song is about a transvestite. It is chirpy and bubbly and has a good feel to it. Is there something wrong with transvestites? The Barry Manilow song is about a showgirl. It is chirpy and bubbly and a bit annoying to be honest. Is there something wrong with "showgirls"? My point - there are worse things to be named after than individuals in two groups of people who do no harm to others and are just getting on with living their life. Oh and are also fictional...It would be far worse to be named after a serial killer, etc... yet the world is crawling with Teds and Charlies and Johns, etc... and yes, I like all of those names and would definitely use Ted, just as I would use Lola.Once a child is born the child becomes their name. I defy anyone to find a name which does not have any sort of connotation, other than those God-awful made up names you see...Live your life kindly, people. Opinions are fine, but nasty judgements really lack a lot of intelligence and class.
Such a feminine, bubbly, cute name. Our kids would probably never hear the Kings song, and they would take it as what it is- just an easy-to-pronounce beautiful name.
My name is Lola which is a short form of Omolola meaning; - CHILD is WEALTH. This is an African name, precisely Nigeria. L-(ola) means WEALTH We have other names like; Funmilola - GIVE ME WEALTH, Emilola - LIFE IS WEALTH, etc.
Haven’t any of you heard of the wonderful singer and actress of the 50's and 60's Lola Albright? She's best known for playing Peter Gunn's girl on the show of the same name from 1958-1961 and was in a number of movies including Kid Galahad, The Tender Trap and A Cold Wind in August. She released two albums in the 50's. She was lovely and graceful just like the name Lola suggests.
I like how this name is uncommon, but I can't help to think of that song about a Transvetite called Lola. This name is bland, and it appears to have no meaning.

This is the Uzbek and Tajik word for tulip which is my gran's favourite flower. Also it means gran, lol. I would use this as a nickname for a longer name. I like the tulip meaning rather than the gran meaning. Also about the book, I have never read it and don't care. I bet lots of people haven't read it- it's just a made up story there are lots of books with characters with my name in them but no one ever comes up to me and says anything about those books to me so why are people worried about a book almost no one has heard of? There have also been lots of prostitutes, strippers, and porn stars with my name but no one has ever mentioned them to me, lol. People worry about the craziest things.

Whenever I hear this name, I am always reminded of Bugs Bunny's girlfriend in Looney Tunes.
Hi all, my daughter is a Lola because the only time she'd move when I was pregnant was if I played Copacabana and was having a very tough time. Saw Lola meant strong woman in Spanish and loved the name even more.
All names were invented.. created at some point! Lola does not have to be a take off of Delores (just because someone who had a Dolores and nicknamed her Lola and someone else liked it and followed suit etc.. doesn't mean it's a rule for the rest of the world!) It can be it's own name!
I know a person called Lola who used to go to school with me. Personally I think it suited her very well. She was always cracking jokes. She had loads of freckles and long brown straight hair. Also she was very strong and always beat everybody at arm wrestles.
Gorgeous name! I really love it. It's fun, spunky, and beautiful!

Actually, my name is Lola, well Dolores. Honestly, I hate the name Dolores. Not because of what it means in my Spanish background but what my first and last name means all together. So personally I like the way Lola sounds. I hate when people call me Dolores. It makes me feel so uncomfortable, literally everyone in school or outside of school calls me Lola. I've gotten so used to it, I start introducing myself as Lola. And it's actually not a tongue twister, it's a decent name, but what so far I've noticed since I'm a big reader, that many authors use Lola as a sexual name in stories to describe a woman. That's what I don't like.

Someone I know just named her daughter Lola and for the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would. When I hear this name, I think of a prostitute standing on a street corner.
I love this name. It is so bubbly, cute and modern. I love the way the name rolls off the tongue and it reminds me of amazing oriental flowers. I think this name is simply beautiful and would use it myself :)
My name is in fact Lola and I love it. It's uncommon but not in a way that people just don't know how to say your name but a down side I have faced is you get the Lola songs sung to you and while at first glance that may not seem bad, those songs get very irritating very quickly. That being said, the name is a simple, beautiful name that doesn't confuse people on how to say it and in my book, that's a win.

This name is so cute, I love it :) it's sweet and simple, and it fits all ages. I think it makes a great name for a person or an animal and I'm glad it's making a comeback! I've never met a Lola, but I've met a girl named Lolla, pronounced the same way. I personally don't like that spelling and it seems quite uncommon.
Well, most of you have never met a Lola in real life huh? I am a Lola. That's my name! I've had people sing to me in the past over The Kinks and other one of whatever Lola wants Lola gets. Never had anyone ask me if I was a transvestite or anything like that. I'm 26 and I'm not snobby or slutty, just shy and married with kids. I'm a red head with green eyes as well ;)

I'm trying to figure out how they got LOLA out of Dolores! I really like Lola. It has been a solid name in the USA for more than a century. I have several Lola's in my family tree and I would consider using the name. It's overdue for a comeback.
Lola is a really cute name, but when I hear it I just start singing "LO-LO LO-LO LO-LUHH!" from The Kinks song. Not the greatest link seeing as the song is about a transvestite.
It's cutesy, yeah, but it's much more legitimate than a lot of popular cutesy names like Kaylee, Rory, etc, which are ditsy and age much worse than Lola. It's also a bit hip.
My husband LOVES this name. I am big on the meaning of names and just couldn't get past "sorrows". However recently I looked into the story instead of just the meaning and realized Dolores is derived from the Virgin Mary - Lady of Sorrows. Eh there is just so many ways this can be looked at in a positive light I think I would name a daughter this now. Just Lola, not Dolores most likely. I have known only one Lola and she was a little toddler at the time. She was very cute and extremely intelligent. Wish I knew what her older self is like, but nonetheless left me with quite a good impression. I think this name is solid and respectable and beautiful on its own.

It is okay as a nickname, but as a full name it sounds immature and trashy. I mean could you imagine a kid saying "let's go to Grandma Lola." You need to choose names that are perfect for a person of any age, not just a 6 year old.
Lola is the name of Marc Jacobs' newest fragrance. It is "his vision of what is feminine and sexy." "Lola is a warm floral bouquet irresistibly alluring, vividly tempting. The fragrance is an intoxicating swirl of rich layers, wrapping the skin in sensuous florals blooming with a signature note of the fuschia peony." "Marc Jacobs designed Lola as an electrifying, over-the-top bouquet exploding from the bottle."(Taken from http://lolamarcjacobs.com/)I think the above quotes could, in a way, describe the name Lola itself as well.

I like this name a lot. Normally I hate nicknames as given names, but this one seems well-established as a name on its own. Unfortunately, celebrities have been getting their hands on it, which makes me not want to use it.
It's such a pretty name. It's funny how such a sunny name comes from a name that means sorrows. Lola doesn't sound like a name that should be associated with sadness. It's very bright to me.
I like the name Lola very much, but not Dolores at all! I wouldn't name my daughter this just because I care too much about the meanings behind the name. Beautiful name though!
My newborn niece has been named Lola and I love it! It's such a pretty and fun name for a little girl and also sounds maternal and loving for a woman! Like my sister in law, I don't believe in giving a child a 'proper' name if you plan to shorten it. It's confusing for the child who will be forever called their 'formal' name by professionals and strangers! If you are always going to call her Lola then why name her Delores! Waste of time!
I think it's a cute pet name of Dolores. I wouldn't name my child this (unless her full name was Dolores), though. But it's a terrific name for a pet (I say this because I named my hamster Lola, after the song by the Kinks).
Okay, it is admittedly kind of cute, and I've heard trashier names, but it still sounds a bit tacky as the official name of someone. On a grown-up, the name sounds a bit stripper-ish, and quite girly at least. This isn't a name you want to try to get a successful career with, unless you're pushing towards showbiz.
I adore the name Lola. It is simple and sweet. I would seriously consider naming my future daughter Lola.

The name is Dolores, not Lola. DOLORES! I hate it when people name their children Lola ignoring where it comes from. Lola, Loli, Lolita, etc., are all pet forms of the name Dolores. You can call your daughter Dolores and then nickname her Lola, but Lola alone is silly, trendy and doesn't mean anything.

I personally think this name is too overused and short, no offense to those Lolas out there. Plus, in the Philippines, this is a name meaning `Grandma`. Famous bearers are Denise Richards's daughter, Lola Rose, and Jennie Garth's daughter, Lola Ray, and Kelly Ripa's daughter, Lola. And Madonna nicknamed her daughter Lola (real name Lourdes).
Lola was stage name of Elizabeth Rosanna Gilbert, better known as Lola Montez, beautiful dancer and mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. I think because of her, and probably because Marlene Dietrich’s fantastic Lola Lola, name Lola reminds me of some seductive, beautiful woman. It's a wonderful name, but I don’t like when it’s a nickname of Dolores. I like to shorten it from Fabiola, Carlota, Lolicia, Lolita, even Aurora. In one story of mine, I use it as nickname for the name Lollia.
I've loved this name for about 4 years, probably since I first saw Run Lola Run (by the way great movie). I convinced my husband to name my daughter this and he absolutely loves the name now. I think this name is fun for a little girl, but yet so womanly.
I like this name, but there are major issues with Dolores/Lola/Lolita. Dolores means pain, and while I could accept that (it is after all related to the Virgin Mary and I think a lot of its usage is more in homage to her), I don't much like the sound of Dolores. Then, Lola and Lolita are both adorable---but "Lola" is forever the tranvestite from the Kinks song, and otherwise seems like sort of a stripper name (when Chris Rock named his daughter Lola, he talked about "keeping her off the pole"). Then, of course, there is the nymphet Lolita, which essentially speaks for itself as a reason.

I was named for my Grandmother and most of the women I meet with the name Lola were also named for their Grandmothers. I can tell which generation a person is by what song they associate with the name. There are many negatives associated with this name in most peoples' minds. Most people don't think of it as a Christian name. It is unfortunate that this name isn't thought of with more compassion.

Lola is one of the main characters in Lauren Child's children's book series(now a Disney animated series) called "Charlie and Lola." Lola is a happy, bubbly girl who often causes unintended trouble. Lola has come to be a pet name for my little girl when she is being mischievious. I love the name, but seems a little informal for a given name.
My name is Lolita, and through my childhood my name was shortened to Lola. I get so many comments about my name from Lola bunny to questions on whether I'm a transvestite or not. But the thing is, there aren't many Lola's out there and I like that. And my belief for the meaning of the name is Strong woman. I have grown to like my name and be proud of it. And I love the song "what ever Lola wants Lola gets!"
I like Lola but not Dolores, Dolores remindes me of pain. I recommend anyone who's thinking about naming their child Dolores to nickname them Lola to think twice because Lola could also be a nickname for Carlota and Fabiola, much prettier names.
Lolita (a pet form of Lola) was the main character in the novel Lolita, by Vladimir Nobekov in which a divorced gentleman finds himself inappropriately obsessed with a minor child. A stigma I would not want my daughter's name associated with.

There are many songs about girls named Lola: Barry Manilow's "Copacabana" (Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl), Ricky Martin's "Lola, Lola" and Marlene Dietrich's "Ich bin die fesche Lola" to mention but a few. Lola sounds lovely but I would probably use another formal name (besides Dolores, Lola could be a nickname for Aurora, Laura, Lorelei, Eleonora etc).
Lola was the name of the name of the main female character in the Broadway musical "Damn Yankees." It's from that musical that we get the song "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets."
Famous bearers include: Artist Lola Schnabel (born Lola Montes Schnabel), daughter of artist Julian Schnabel; The daughter of Annie Lennox; Jennie Garth´s daughter (her other daughter is Luka). This is also the nickname of Madonna´s daughter, Lourdes Maria.

Lola in Sanskrit means goddess Lakshmi. In Spanish, it means "strong woman".
