Meaning & History
Possibly a Welsh form of the hypothetic old Celtic name *Lugumarcos meaning "horse of Lugus", derived from the name of the Celtic god Lugus combined with Welsh march "horse", but perhaps the first element is Welsh llyw "leader". This was the name of a legendary 6th-century Welsh prince and poet, Llywarch Hen. It died out after the 14th century, but was revived in the 19th century.
