Meaning & History

Llefelys may be derived from Cligueillus or Digueillus, which may be a corruption of the Old Welsh name Higuel (specifically, the 10th century AD king Higuel (Howel/Houuel).

An alternate theory is that the name Llefelys is a compound, with the first element deriving from Lleu, which is derived from Lugus, which has Indo-European roots lewk "light, brightness", lewg "dark" or lewgh "oath". However, it is still a matter of scholarly debate.
