From Old Irish lí meaning "beauty, brilliance" and ban "of women" (genitive plural of ben "woman, wife"). This was the name of multiple Irish mythological figures: an otherworldly woman in the Ulster Cycle; and a woman who supposedly transformed into a mermaid (also known as Muirgen).
