Meaning & History
Old English name meaning "dear Geat", composed of the elements leof "dear, beloved" combined with Geat, which referred to a member of the Germanic tribe, the Geats. Perhaps it was an epithet of the hero Beowulf, a legendary Geat (which is cognate to Goth and Gaut).
