Well used as a female name in the US in the 1800s and early 1900s, probably as a diminutive of names like Caroline with the last syllable pronounced "Len".
Could be a nickname for Madeleine if you pronounce it the original French way (mad-e-len).

Well I think the name is very feminine since I know lots of girls called Lennie and every single one of them are extremely girly and it really matches their personality and looks But yes of course Lennie from mice and men is very funny.
Nice name, I just don't see how anyone would consider using it for a girl because to me Lennie is a masculine name, I've only met one Lennie so far, he's very handsome and suave, so now every time I hear the name I picture a great looking guy with a great personality.

It's a cute nickname, but it will equal bullying for life since it's associated with the large, unintelligent character from Of Mice and Men.
Jerry Orbach played Detective Lennie Briscoe for 12 years on the original Law & Order TV series until he died of prostate cancer on Dec 28, 2004. The character of Lennie Briscoe also had guest spots over the years on Homicide: Life on the Streets, Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: CI, and Law & Order: Trial by Jury. Lennie Briscoe was also the longest running character on a prime time TV series until 2005.
