Meaning & History
Means "son of Latychos" in Greek, derived from the name Latychos combined with ίδας (idas), which is the Aeolic and Doric Greek form of the patronymic suffix ἴδης (ides).Outside of this name, there are no surviving records that prove the existence of the name Latychos. However, both the variant spellings of this name and its cognates in other Greek dialects indicate that Latychos was a dithematic name that consisted of Greek λαός (laos) meaning "people" and Greek τύχη (tyche) meaning "chance, luck, fortune".Latychidas was the name of a king of Sparta, who ruled from about 491 BC to 476 BC. He is much better known under the names Leotychides (full Attic Greek translation of his name) and Leotychidas (partial Attic Greek translation).
