Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek adjective κωμαῖος (komaios) meaning "of a village", which is ultimately derived from the Greek noun κώμη (kome) meaning "village". The latter word is not to be confused with the Greek noun κόμη (kome) meaning "hair (of the head)".Also compare the Greek nouns κῶμα (koma) meaning "coma, deep sleep" and κῶμος (komos) meaning "revel, carousal, merry-making".
