Meaning & History

From Japanese 小 (ko) meaning "small, little" and 茉 (machi) meaning "white jasmine", 海 (machi) meaning "ocean" or 町 (machi) meaning "town". Other kanji combinations can be used.

A famous bearer is the Japanese waka poet Ono no Komachi (c. 825 - c. 900). As a word, 小町 (komachi) means "belle, beautiful woman", in reference to the poet, who was famous for her beauty.
