Meaning & History
Literally means "a fearsome dog". The main sense of this is to refer to a guard dog who terrifies evil spirits and drives them off from the tomb sites of important people. The Chinese 'stone lions' or 'lions of Buddha' (shíshī) are probably a related concept.Alternatively, some people say that Khasar means "archer". Since there is not just one dialect in the Mongolian language group, but several, it is difficult to be sure.
